Are Childhood Cavities Inevitable?

child friendly dentist Hurst

Parents who want their children to develop healthy habits know that they need to set the example. The “Do as I say, not as I do,” approach does not instill confidence in children.

If we want our child to exercise, we should get off the couch ourselves. If we want our child to select an apple when he wants an afternoon snack, we better not be snacking on chips and cookies. If we routinely stay up until 1:00 a.m, our adolescent will probably not learn the importance of recharging their physical and mental batteries with restorative sleep.

What about healthy oral habits? Do our children see us brush carefully after meals? Do our children find water bottles in our car cup holders or empty sports drink cans? Do we schedule twice-yearly dental visits for ourselves and our kids? Do we wear a mouthguard when playing contact sports? Do we floss every night?

Did you know that tooth decay is the second most common childhood health problem in Texas – after the common cold? If you have a newborn or toddler, you have a wonderful opportunity to establish daily habits for lifelong oral health.

If every pre-teen in your  neighborhood has at least a few fillings, it may seem that cavities are inevitable. At Hyatt Family Dental, we don’t believe this common notion. There is much you can do to keep your young child’s baby teeth and adult teeth cavity-free.

In fact, there are important things to do even before your baby’s first teeth erupt. Remember not to put your baby to bed with a bottle. Wipe milk or formula off their gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeding. Don’t let your infant drink juice all day. If you want your baby or toddler to drink between meals, water is just fine.

When should you bring in your toddler for their first dental check-up? The American Dental Association recommends that a child sees a dentist before their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday.

If your children are older and have had a lot of cavities, don’t give up. It is never too late to improve daily habits to keep teeth healthy. Even if your upbringing didn’t include an emphasis on oral hygiene, you can set your own traditions starting today.

I am doctor Clinton Hyatt of Hyatt Family Dental. I am passionate about oral health for the entire family. I advise parents about tooth development, thumb-sucking, water fluoridation, dental sealants, oral sports protection, orthodontia, and much more.

My courteous dental team will make your child feel comfortable and relaxed. If you are looking for a child-friendly dentist in the Hurst area, we invite you to schedule a pediatric dental appointment by calling 817-500-4228 .

Limit Sugar For Healthier Hurst Kids

Family Dentist Hurst

Every health-conscious  parent knows that sugar is the number one cause of cavities for kids–and plenty of us adults also snack on too many sweet snacks and beverages.

Because of cavity risks, low nutritional value, and high calorie content, many Hurst parents want to limit the sugar in their children’s diets. Obviously, there is a lot of sugar in bubble gum, lollipops, and gummy candy. But there is also sugar lurking in so-called ‘healthy’ snacks.

Here are some popular kid’s snacks with significant amounts of sugar:

yogurt covered raisins
fruit snacks including the roll-up and syrup-filled varieties
rice cakes
many brands of yogurt including the hand-held type
juice drinks
flavored milk
barbecue sauce
fruit smoothies
cereal bars

Controlling sugar intake in your child’s diet is essential for lifelong oral health. When choosing lunchbox or after-school snacks at your market, convenience store or recreation center snack bar, read the labels. Sugar content varies among brands.

Sugar is only one diet component that impacts kids’ oral health. If your son’s or daughter’s diet is lacking key vitamins and minerals, the tissues in their mouth may have trouble fighting infection. These infections can lead to gum disease.

At Hyatt Family Dental, we provide high-quality childrens’, general, and cosmetic dentistry to patients in the Texas communities of Hurst, East Euless, and North Richland Hills. The team at Hyatt Family Dental pampers our youngest patients. If you have a toddler who has not visited a dentist, call us today to schedule a first-time dental check-up. Our number is 817-500-4228 .

Does Your Teen Have Unique Dental Challenges?

adolescent dental health

When it comes to oral health, adolescence is a pivotal time. The last of the permanent teeth come in, providing young men and women with their “adult smile.” Good habits can be forged and reinforced. Teeth can be corrected with orthodontia, providing increased confidence when it is often sorely needed.

Bad Habits

Sometimes, teens develop habits that are detrimental to their teeth. They often don’t understand the importance of proper dental hygiene and how it affects lifelong oral health. Tooth decay in adolescence can cause recurring dental problems later on.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders also contribute to tooth decay. Bulimia causes enamel erosion, decay, and even complete tooth loss. We strongly advise parents to intervene if they suspect their teen has an eating disorder.

Poor Diet

The importance of diet cannot be overstated. Many teenagers decrease their calcium intake – a danger to both bones and teeth. The consumption of energy drinks and sugared soda also contribute to tooth and gum problems in teenagers.

Tobacco and Illegal Drugs

Tobacco and illegal drug use increases the risk of tooth decay and oral cancer. Oral piercings can be extremely dangerous. The health risks include tooth and gum damage, infection, allergic reactions, nerve damage, and excessive swelling that can block airways.

Improper Brushing and Flossing with Braces

Teens undergoing orthodontic treatment often have a difficult time properly cleaning their teeth. It is a challenge to fit toothbrush bristles and floss under dental hardware. Toothbrushes and flossing devices that squirt water can help youth with braces adequately clean their teeth and gums.

Make sure your teenager receives twice-yearly dental exams and cleanings. Dr. Hyatt can identify and treat oral issues in their early stages so that further damage can be prevented or minimized.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers the following vital guidelines for adolescent oral health:

Teens should drink fluoridated water.
Fluoride supplementation is recommended for high risk teens that don’t have access to fluoridated water (up to age 16).
Teens should use fluoridated toothpaste twice a day.
Teens should floss daily.1

To schedule a comprehensive teen dental examination and cleaning, call Hyatt Family Dental at 817-500-4228 . The team of friendly dental professionals at Hyatt Family Dental is dedicated to oral health for Hurst area patients of all ages.

Been A While Since You’ve Visited A Dentist?

Hurst, Texas Residents Visit the Dentist Whether you have lived in Texas for a long time, or just moving in to the Hurst area; taking care of your teeth eventually involves a visit to the dentist. We are Hyatt Family Dental located at 8711 Bedford Euless Rd in Hurst, Texas. If you are looking for an experienced family dentist, we invite you to come in for a consultation  You can reach Hyatt Family Dental to schedule an exam by calling 817-500-4228 .

The very idea of visiting a dentist holds a negative connotation for many people. If you are an adult with dental anxiety, or your child is preparing to visit the dentist for the first time, here are a few tips that may help ease you into regular dental checkups and put you on the path toward increased oral health and wellness.

Choose a dentist in the Mid-Cities who is appropriate for your needs. When you meet your new Hurst dentist for the first time, make an effort to ask questions about the care you will receive. Be sure to communicate with your dentist about his/her experience, age range of patients, and recommended procedures for any issues you may have. Get to know your dentist so you feel comfortable and relaxed.

Be prepared to provide your dentist with information. Whether you are experiencing specific pain at that moment, or anticipating a problem, be sure to discuss everything with your dentist. Many patients become intimidated in the office environment and avoid expressing pain or discussing issues. As your dentist, I need to know your history and everything you are experiencing. I will be better prepared to help if I have accurate and complete information.

There is no need to feel self-conscious if it has been a long time since you have received dental treatment. I have treated many first-time patients in your situation and have developed a trusting relationship with them.

The best way to have a good experience with a new dentist is to communicate. Let me know what you are experiencing so that I can make adjustments and help you feel more comfortable and secure. If we determine that you are going to need a key dental procedure more extensive than filling a cavity, let’s discuss sedation dentistry.

At Hyatt Family Dental our friendly staff will work to make your dental experience a pleasant one. We know it can be uncomfortable to visit the dentist for the first time or after a long while. We’ll do what we can to make you feel relaxed, secure, and among caring friends.

If you are in Hurst, Texas and are ready to visit the dentist again, give us a call at 817-500-4228 to schedule an appointment. We look forward to meeting you and your family.

Transform your self-image with your best smile!

3 Behind-The-Scenes Dental Advances For Texas

Crown lengthening Bedford

Bedford dental patients who have undergone a smile redesign are probably aware of the latest cosmetic dental procedures popular in the Hurst area. These include metal-free fillings, porcelain veneers, invisible braces, implant-anchored dentures, and inlays/onlays.

Today’s Bedford dental post focuses on some nifty dentistry advances that are used behind-the-scenes to benefit Bedford dentists and dental patients alike.

Digital imaging is not just for Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest, many cutting-edge Texas dental offices use digital X-Rays. Realtime digital images help Hurst dentists more easily spot and treat oral problems including emerging cavities and bone recession. Digital X-Rays require far less radiation exposure and are easier to store and access.

Pinpoint-precise Diode lasers are used in myriad procedures including crown lengthening, root scaling, biopsies, root canals, teeth whitening, oral lesion removal, and treatment of dental decay. Laser procedures are easier on the patient and require shorter healing times.

CAD (computer-aided design) and CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) are used for many restorative procedures in Bedford including in-office inlays/onlays and same-day crowns. Hurst dentists who offer dental implants can use CAD/CAM technology in every phase of the dental implant procedure. CAD/CAM is used in Texas dental laboratories to fabricate crowns, bridges, veneers, and ceramic braces.

The future of dentistry is here today. I’m doctor Clinton Hyatt. Hyatt Family Dental is located at 8711 Bedford Euless Rd in Hurst. We can be reached at 817-500-4228 . Ask us about:

Hyatt Family Dental Takes Care Of Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Hurst Guide To Plaque, Calculus, And Cavities

Hi. I’m doctor Clinton Hyatt. Welcome to my Hurst dental blog! I find that many of my patients in the East Euless, North Richland Hills, and Bedford areas get a couple of dental terms mixed up. Today, I would like to clarify the differences between plaque, calculus, and cavities.

Plaque is a film that covers teeth – a sticky layer of bacteria. You can remove plaque through daily brushing and flossing. However, if it isn’t removed it can build up and harden into calculus.

Calculus, also known as tartar, is hardened plaque that also accumulates minerals from food and saliva. Regular check-ups and cleanings with your Hurst dentist are necessary to remove tartar as well as hard-to-reach plaque.

Plaque and calculus are not cavities, but they can lead to cavities. A cavity is basically a hole in the tooth caused by decay. Because plaque and calculus contain bacteria, the bacteria release acids which accelerate tooth decay and eventually lead to more cavities.

A good rule of thumb for Hurst dental patients is this: Avoid plaque to avoid calculus and tartar to avoid tooth decay to avoid cavities. Got it?

I hope you’ve found this helpful, and if you’re in the East Euless, North Richland Hills, or Bedford area and are in need of quality dental care, call our office at 817-500-4228 to schedule an appointment today.

Our friendly staff would love to answer any questions you have about our services, including cosmetic dentistry, teeth whitening, and veneers.

Your Perfect Smile Is Only A Few Dental Visits Away

Hurst lowest price teeth bleaching

What does it take to really change the way you look? Hours upon hours at the gym? Expensive trips to the most cutting-edge salon in the Hurst area? What about a routine trip to your dentist?

You may not love going to the dentist, but you will love the results when they help you find the best way to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening in Hurst is a simple cosmetic dentistry procedure, but the dramatic results never cease to impress.

Your East Euless, North Richland Hills, or Bedford dentist can work with you to develop a teeth whitening regimen that will be most effective. This may include any of the following three methods:

1. Bleaching done in-office. Sometimes called chairside bleaching, a special light is used while a bleaching agent is applied to the teeth. A rubber shield or protective gel is used to keep your tender gums safe from the whitening agent.

2. Bleaching at home. Even though this is done at home, the peroxide-containing whiteners used do have potential side effects, so it’s a good idea to discuss this with your dentist. Also, there are many at-home whiteners available in Hurst, Texas drug stores, and your dentist can direct you to the best ones.

3. Toothpastes with whitening properties. When a toothpaste carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance, it means that it contains special chemical or polishing agents. These will provide additional stain removal which complements the surface stain removal offered by all toothpastes.

My name is doctor Clinton Hyatt of Hyatt Family Dental in Hurst. Helping my dental patients establish good habits is important to me, as is helping them achieve the smile they want using cosmetic dentistry procedures such as veneers, teeth whitening, bonding, and complete smile makeovers.

My practice, Hyatt Family Dental, is currently accepting new patients, so give us a call at 817-500-4228 to make an appointment!

We hope to hear from you soon!
